The Irish Traditional Music Institute is located in the County Clare Village of Newmarket-on-Fergus. County Clare has a reputation of excellence in the traditional music genre, with a wealth of talented musicians which the institute avails of through its teachers, guest lecturers and performers’ programmes.
Set on 2.5 acres, Beechlawn House itself is part of the living history of the village. Located just north of the village, the houses history spans over 200 years and has been used as an infirmary during the famine, a schoolhouse and a military barracks.
‘By 1845 temporary fever wards were appearing in the workhouses throughout the country. The Ennis workhouse and infirmary struggled to contain the increasing number of inmates. In the winter of 1847 there was an increase in the hardships and the death rate climbed rapidly. By the following winter the country witnessed a new horror: the Asiatic cholera. Newmarket-on-Fergus was hit with this illness by spring of 1849 and it was decided that the area needed a temporary hospital of its own. Some victims of the cholera were being treated in makeshift cabins in the village. However most are believed to have been treated at Beechlawn by Dr. Mac Dermott and Dr. Evans. …..The location of the house was also a benefit in keeping control of such an epidemic, as it is a building with its own separate grounds and it is a distance from the village.’
